HikingAkrotiri – Lighthouse

18 Μαρτίου 20210

This walk is takes place in a part of Santoríni which remains unknown to most visitors to the island. There are some beautiful trails. This walk follows some sections of gravel roads and a long stretch of asphalt road - at least if you want to continue up to the lighthouse. It remains interesting that this walk  takes place quite among the vines and above the village of Akrotíri with splendid view of the caldera.

This short walk takes place in the foothills of the Profítis Ilias and may be useful as a continuation of the hike Emborió - Pýrgos - Profítis Ilias - Théra - Períssa . The beach of Períssa is quite nice and the kástro of Emborío is also nice.

The caldera measures about 12 by 7 km (7.5 by 4.3 mi), with 300 m (980 ft) high steep cliffs on three sides. There are two small volcanic islands at the center of the caldera, Nea ("New") Kameni and Palea ("Old") Kameni. The main island, Santorini has an area of 75.8 km2 (29.3 sq mi) km2, Therasia 9.3 km2 (3.6 sq mi), and the uninhabited islands of Nea Kameni 3.4 km2 (1.3 sq mi), Palea Kameni 0.5 km2 (0.19 sq mi) and Aspronisi 0.1 km2 (0.039 sq mi). The extraordinary beauty of Santorini's high walls, draped by whitewashed villages, combined with a sunny climate and perfect observation conditions, have made it a magnet for volcanologists,[1] as well as a highlight of tourism in the Aegean.

HistorySantorini of the Past

Santorini, an island of Cyclades, is an Aegean volcanic island arc (75,79 sq. km; 11400 inhab.) surfaced in the prehistoric age. Nowadays it is just the eastern edge of an ancient crater sunk into the sea about 2000 years BC, after an explosive eruption of the Volcano.
